Up to the late sixties of this century the number of species of the genus Uca occurring on the East and Gulf coasts of North America seemed rather well established. Usually ten species were listed: U. burgersi Holthuis ( = U. affinis (Streets)), U. leptodactyla Rathbun, U. minax (Le Conte), U. pugilator (Bosc), U. pugnax (Smith), U. rapax (Smith), U. speciosa (Ives), U. spinicarpa Rathbun, U. subcylindrica (Stimpson) and U. thayeri Rathbun. Subsequently, however, some uncertainty arose about the number of fiddler crab species of the Gulf coast area. Barnwell (1968) mentioned an undescribed species from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, and Salmon and co-workers described no less than three new Gulf coast species of Uca (Salmon & Atsaides, 1968; Novak &... |

The paper presents a model of choice between alternative available jobs in which each job has an uncertain multi-period income prospect. Imperfectly informed expectations as well as job preferences and attitudes to risk determine the choice. The model is used to locate and discuss some problems of designing government programs which are intended to increase job mobility. The main conclusion is that government interventions may impose costs on the economy which are greater than the benefits because the information needed to assess costs and benefits is not generally available and political pressures may distort the expenditures. |

A model of the Australian orange growing industry to explain changes in plantings, removals, the number and age composition of trees and orange production is developed and estimated. Most of the variation in plantings is explained by the expected profitability of growing oranges, the current stocks of bearing and nonbearing trees, and removals of trees last year. Estimates of the elasticities of response of plantings and production to price changes are low and there are long time lags. An illustrative application of the model projects future developments in the industry for alternative assumptions about the profitability of growing oranges. |

Through the kindness of Mr. Philip Chapman of Culford, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, it was made possible for me to examine a male and a female of a species of cavernicolous crab from the Western Highlands of Papua New Guinea, collected there by Mr. N. Plumley. The species proved to be new to science and its description is given below. A recent revision of the New Guinea freshwater crabs (Bott, 1974) listed 13 certain and 3 dubious species from the island. These 13 species belong to 3 genera (Rouxana Bott, 1969: 5 species; Geelvinkia Bott, 1974: 3 species; and Holthuisana Bott, 1969: 5 species). The first two genera and the nominate subgenus of the third are confined to New Guinea. All three genera belong to the family Sundathelphusidae Bott, 1969. The new... |

Myonycteris relicta n. sp. is described from the Shimba Hills in southeast Kenya and from the Usambara Mountains in northeast Tanzania. The species is larger than the only other known African mainland species of the genus, Myonycteris torquata (Dobson, 1878), from the Central and West African rain forests and, if compared to M. torquata and the only other species in the genus, M. brachycephala (Bocage, 1889) from São Tomé, has a relatively longer rostrum, a more deflected cranial axis, and further differs in number, shape and position of its teeth. The new species provides new arguments for the relationship between the genera Myonycteris Matschie, 1899, and Lissonycteris Andersen, 1912. It is believed that Myonycteris relicta may be a forest species and as... |
